Hello, since a few days, my TDS3045B does not continue with the correct date / time after I power it off.
Each time I power it on, I have to set the new date / time, but it gets "stalled" after I power it off.

Is there a backup battery to replace (not that I can find in the manual) or is there something else I can do to fix that?

Thanks, Kees

Hi Kees,

The TDS3054B uses a DS1742 for its data and time settings. This chip has an internal lithium battery which powers it when external power is off.
From the symptoms you reported it sounds like this chip has become defective (at least its battery) and so would require replacement or repair.

Hi Afonso,

thanks for the info, any idea where this DS1742 chip is hiding in the TDS3054B, on what module?

Kees

Ok, i found it, it's on the main? board and can be seen in this teardown video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leC-zSMbtfg around 15 min. in.
It's the DS1742W-150 Dallas (top right) U640, at least for a TDS3054 (mine is TDS3054B).

They seem hard to find nowadays, but there are some replacements, although also many fakes.

Kees

Good replacements might be relatively expensive simply due to the nature of the part.

Since it seems the only problem is the battery (date and time track properly with power on), it might be possible to add an external battery to fulfill the same role. This would require modification of the circuit to disconnect the Vcc pin of the chip from the rest of instrument so the external battery is only feeding that chip.

Any modifications or repairs might void your warranty or make your instrument unable to pass performance verification or calibration, proceed at your own risk.
